Ransomware: Prevention, detection and repair strategies
ANSWER
Ransomware: Prevention and resilience strategies are key concerns
At Lyon Cyber Expo 2024, cybersecurity experts gathered to discuss the pressing issue of ransomware attacks, which pose a real threat to businesses of all sizes. The event was moderated by Rémi Grivel, President of Clusir Auvergne Rhône-AlpesThese discussions highlighted the crucial challenges faced by micro-enterprises, SMEs, mid-sized companies and local authorities.
A large-scale threat
The figures speak for themselves: according to the overview of the Cyber Threat 2023 published by ANSSI: 34% of cyberattacks are ransomware attacks They target very small businesses and SMEs, ahead of local authorities at 24%. An alarming reality, especially since attacks increased by 30% in 2023. Didier Lage, zonal coordinator of RECyMHe stressed that many of these structures are poorly prepared and underinsured, making them even more vulnerable to organized cyberattacks. Patrick Abiven, manager and co-founder of ApitechHe also noted that “the lack of awareness among leaders is an aggravating factor.”
A well-honed method of attack
Ransomware operates by infiltrating a computer system, often through a simple click on a malicious link. Hackers, frequently associated with criminal organizations, not only encrypt data but also attempt to monetize their attacks. Clémence Philippe, co-founder and director of operations at ExaminHe added that “these cybercriminals are becoming more professional, using increasingly sophisticated methods to maximize their impact.” Guillaume Santiago, CEO of OnlynnovHe added that “ransomware is reaching a level of organization reminiscent of that of businesses.”
Prepare to resist
To combat these threats, it is essential to adopt a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. Patrick Abiven emphasized the importance of employee awareness, infrastructure security, and establishing cyber risk insurance contracts. “Training should not be a one-off event, but an ongoing process,” he stated. Clémence Philippe also stressed that “the human factor must be at the heart of all security initiatives, because even the best technology cannot compensate for misuse.”
Responding to the crisis
In terms of responsiveness to an attack, experts agree that when a company is compromised, time is of the essence. It is crucial to have a well-defined crisis management plan, including notification protocols for the authorities, particularly the CNIL (French Data Protection Authority), within 72 hours of discovering a breach. Rémi Grivel explained that “this is all the more crucial within the French legal framework, where legislation is evolving to better protect businesses.” Didier Lage warned that “failure to act quickly can have disastrous consequences, both financially and reputationally.”
A collective challenge
The fight against ransomware is a collective challenge. Businesses must unite to share best practices, strengthen their resilience, and engage with authorities to improve the fight. By adopting proactive strategies and cultivating a cybersecurity culture, the sector can hope not only to minimize risks but also to build a safer and more resilient ecosystem against cyber threats.
